Goobric w/ Doctopus- Add Rubrics Straight to Google Docs

Standard

Rubric based feedback is a proven way to clarify what is expected from students, however when work is produced digitally adding a rubric to a students work itself can be a multistep process. Three powerful tools connect and streamline this feedback loop.

Speech to Text Worth Rethinking

Standard

Voice tools are expanding and transforming access to learning in the auditory realm like never before.

The speech to text tool within Google Drive has dramatically improved.  Below are a few ways you might want to consider using it to enhance the ways you give students feedback, or student learning. Speech to text is also useful for students that are auditory learners.

  • Voice comments for feedback-Consider replacing your red pen or written comments for conversational style feedback
  • Voice comments for conversation- Get a thread going between you and your students within the actual document they are working on
  • Provide auditory input for students outside of class-For language learners, pronunciation and word choice is often tricky. By capturing your voice they can replace your voice as many times as necessary, something that in class would be quite awkward for you and the students:)

TRY IT and add your voice comments within this Google doc.

*Screencastify is a solid screencast tool that saves straight to Google drive.

Gamify Learning Extensions

Standard

Helping to guide students from good to great, a 5 to a 6, a 3 to a 5 etc. is tricky and resource intense.  Below are three examples below that leverage the power to gamification worth checking out:

Vocab.com as I have previously shared  is one way to gamify  subject specific vocab.  Ask your ELL or English colleagues if you would like insight into how it’s being used at ZIS.

Quizup goes beyond Quizlet in that it matches individuals up in real time to compete in their knowledge of a selected topic..need more convincing… check out an IB Bio teacher at ASB’s experience.

Moodle Upgrade – Test Your Courses Now (please:))

Standard

20150424_083243

The sandbox (a copy of our current Moodle upgraded to the new version) is ready for testing. Now you will need to spot check your courses by doing what you would normally do… upload a file, link a website etc.  None of the changes you make in the sandbox will effect your current courses. If you find any issues please communicate them to Liz ASAP.

As stated earlier this month, Moodle needs to be upgraded due to security concerns.  Our timeline for migration to the upgraded version is as follows:

  • Oct-Nov.  Sandbox environment tested
  • December (during the holidays) migration to new version
  • For a few months into semester two, the old install will be available to access files just in case

Google Keep

Standard

Do you have stickies all over your desktop? Do you see your students with stickies all over their desktops?

Google Keep is an much better alternative to using stickies because:

  • Keep notes are accessible via any device (including phones)
  • Keep notes can easily be shared with others, making them ideal for group planning
  • Keep notes can be time specific with the ability to set reminders and deadlines
